Bing Reported as Running on Linux

When Frank Sandoval came to me with a screen shot proposing that Bing.com actually ran on Linux I was skeptical to say the least. No way Microsoft would do that… and why wouldn’t this be main news? I asked of him.

While I don’t know the why’s or what’s it is reported by netcraft.com that the ip addresses used to resolve http://www.bing.com is running on Linux OS. Screenshot, Live Page

Now, in Microsoft’s defense I cannot find another source to be sure as they use p3p in their html headers.
So the Linux OS could be netcraft reporting a load ballancer or who knows what… still you think if Microsoft was using one of it’s own technologies it would proudly be displayed on the home page.

@Rexm pointed out that StackOverflow had this question posted as well. Link

Another Note: It has been said to me many times that this probably Bing’s CDN and not Bing’s actual webserver. I wrote this post because if you type Bing.com into netcraft it says Linux is the server type. I do agree with many and even said that it is more than likely to be load balancers than bing itself… It turns out that it could be Akamai that has the linux servers than Bing being hosted on Linux servers… It should also be noted that Akamai is the worlds largest CDN, but I still find it interesting that Microsoft would have anything Linux related in their server platform even if it is the CDN.

  • Akamai, the content distribution platform (like a reverse proxy), is running Linux. It says nothing about what Bing is running.

  • Dude, they use akamai CDN service, which runs on linux.

  • Does Microsoft not have load balancers and their own CDN… should they not be using that?

  • Understandable mistake. Took me a second to catch it.

Akamai is the most widely used (and arguably best) CDN – disclaimer: my company uses it – so it’s clear why Microsoft would leverage it. That being said, Microsoft is building it’s own CDN:

  • Does Microsoft not have load balancers and their own CDN… should they not be using that?

Yes, MS has load balancers – at their end. No, they don’t have their own CDN. Akamai is the biggest (and best) out there. Even if they did, “should” is a relative decision based on a simple cost analysis. They “should” do whatever they want to make their service work well.

Here’s a good explanation of what Akamai does:

  • As I was writing the story I proposed it as it was netcraft reporting that bing.com was running on linux. even if it is microsoft’s cdn that is running on linux and not Bing itself I believe the story to still be accurate. when you enter bing.com in netcraft linux is the selected server type.

I will place a update on the post that say’s akamai is bing’s CDN and that it is the largest in the world and that it may be what is being reported as linux.

    Thanks for your comments.

    http://www.bing.com points to akamai
however, you cannot CNAME a 2nd level domain while still delegating authority, so bing.com cannot point directly to akamai.
There appears to be an f5 load balancer in front of some unknow webservers, which just handle http 301 (moved permanently) redirects to http://www.bing.com, and thus akamai.

  • The fact that it is Akamai that uses Linux doesn’t change the fact that Linux is still essential to the correct functioning of Bing.com

  • Who cares, BING is irrelevant. Too little, too late. While Google continues to provide the solutions I need to satisfy my customers. As a small business owner, I don’t give a rats a$$ what Bing, Ping, or Ding use/do … I just need to provide easy, cost-beneficial solutions. And MSFT has NEVER delivered.

  • Bing search engine gives almost the same search results as Google. Looks like Google will now have a tough competition when it comes to search engine technology.

  • Since Google has the lead on them I doubt there just going to let it go.
It is like Xerox or Clorox they have brand association so they are the leaders.
However, I do like the tagline “Hey, I just BINGED your MOM!”
So Bing may come out victorious but not without a fight.

And if MS’s customers start doing this then they will come to the same conclusion (ie Linux servers) and MS is dead.

  • Bing does give search results much like Google but i would have to say that Google still gives more relevant search results.

  • i am using both Bing and Google and i think both search engines give relevant search results. i would still prefer Google though, because it gives a little bit more relevant search results than Bing.

  • BING search engine is just as good as Google. In my own personal experience, Google does give more releveant search result than Bing but the difference is very small. **

  • my default search engine is Yahoo but now i am using BING because it is much better than Yahoo. i heard that Bing search engine would power Yahoo search also.

  • i think that Bing is not as good as Google. Google would still index new websites faster than Bing. Microsoft would still need a lot of catching to do with GoogleBot.

  • I use both Bing and Google search engine and i dont see much difference in their search results. I use google for searching hard to find academic topics and Bing for general search.

  • Good luck getting people behind this one.  Though you make some VERY fascinating points, youre going to have to do more than bring up a few things that may be different than what weve already heard.  What are trying to say here?  What do you want us to think?  It seems like you cant really get behind a unique thought.  Anyway, thats just my opinion.

  • Even though your comment has nothing to do with Bing running as Linux and the YouTube video has to do with some online game I will still approve your comment. I don’t really know why other than to be able to make this comment public.
