Tried and Failed

May 29, 2007   //   by David Bates   //   Life Stories  //  No Comments

I tried to quit smoking only to learn that the urge to continue is strong.

Boy I never thought that I was addicted to cigarettes, when did that happen?

I will try again in a few weeks after my pride comes back.

College Update

May 24, 2007   //   by David Bates   //   College  //  No Comments

I have now tested out of 4 classes and have accumulated 11 credit hours.
I have a 4.0 gpa and have finished my first 5 weeks.
This has to be my hardest week yet. The next five weeks include both and English and Communication, both of which are not my strongest points.

On Monday I watched a movie Akeelah and the Bee, while this was not the best movie I ever watched it did have a quote in it that I found remarkably uplifting.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness,
that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually who are we not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people
won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine as children do.
We were born to make manifest
the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And when we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

- Marianne Williamson

Anyway, I will be spending most of my time at work or in class so my participation over the next five weeks may be sparse.

Thank you for reading.

Freshman Orientation

May 13, 2007   //   by David Bates   //   College  //  No Comments

Tonight we had a great speaker who will also be my career adviser.
We talked about the ladder to success and how I could maybe skip a few rungs.
We also turned in our Midterms which for this class was a biography on Steve Jobs.
I designed the cover page in PowerCADD which is the application I currently help develop.
(You can read more about my work on PowerCADD from the blogs in the work category.)
I made a 100% on my biography.
The assignment was to write a biography about someone that has inspired you.
The guidelines for the assignment where:
1. Include a Cover-Page the you have designed.
2. Include a Two Page TYPED Biography 10-12 point font, Double Spaced.
3. Include two citations in the Biography. Also, include a Citation Page.

College Update

I am in my 4rth week at ECPI and I am doing fine. I have tested out of 2 classes so far, Operating Systems was an easy test-out as it was only 10 questions about DOS, Micro-Computer Applications was a lot harder than I thought as they wanted me to re-create 6 or 7 documents as close as I could but they did not provide any information as to what font or even size they used. Needless to say I have accumulated 5 credit hours and have not even finished my first real class.
Next week I will try and test-out of Computer Config/Upgrades and Website Design.

Note: I am trying various site designs and the look of this website may change several times over the next few weeks.

Thanks for reading.

My First Blog Entry

May 2, 2007   //   by David Bates   //   Uncategorized  //  1 Comment

To All,

Welcome to my little spot on the world wide web !

This is my first entry in what I hope will become a daily routine for me.
I have never been one to keep a journal so this is a life-changing decision for me.
I hope that you will enjoy reading my blog and I hope that I can provide meaningful content to you.

To start I guess I should state the goals of this blog.

1. To improve my writing skill through daily blog entries.
2. To express my ideas and emotions in a public venue.
3. To keep a record of my life which I may choose to print someday for my grandchildren.

I could easily go to 10 but I think for today I will keep it simple.
I will describe myself in a later post, I wished to make my first post all about the goals I wish to accomplish.

Thank you
David Bates
